Part 2

The Call

[bottom]

About five weeks later, in my office, the phone rings:

Me: Hello?
Voice: Is this Bill Nyden?
Me: Yes.
Voice: Would you like to come down to be a contestant on Jeopardy!?
Me: That's a silly question.
Glenn: Some people do change their minds.

I confirmed that I still wanted to try, and Glenn told me to show up at the same studio guard gate at 10 am on Monday, August 22. I should be prepared to stay through Wednesday in case I didn't get started until the second day, and continued to win. I should bring at least two changes of clothes to wear on the show, so it didn't look as if I were wearing the same clothes several days in a row (presuming I would be winning.)

When I asked about hotels, Glenn said the studio had a special rate at the Hollywood Hilton. My next question was about when the shows I taped would be aired. He told me that the Monday shows were scheduled to air the week of October 30-November 3; and the Tuesday shows would air the week of November 20-24. The "Tournament of Champions" would take place the two weeks between.

I again confirmed I would be there and we hung up.

"ALL RIGHT!" I yelled. (Most unprofessional, I know.)

"What's the ruckus?" came from across the room.

"Bill's going to be on Jeopardy!" answered Bev, the secretary, who'd heard the conversation.

Needless to say, I wasn't very productive during the next five weeks.
